"AGQUI 3 SET 77" and two-line "Da Montevideo coi Postali Italiani" alongside, reverse flap roughly opened and small tear at top, otherwise a fine and attractive cover directly consigned to the Italian Consulate

1867, Postal stationery enevelope Numerals 10c. green endorsed "p. Vapore Europa" paying the local postage, taxed "9" d. and two-line "Da Buenos Aires coi Postali Italiani" alongside, faults at top and two disinfection slits, a rare cover as the "Europa" did not call at Montevideo, the cover was privately sent to the Buenos Aires P.O. and embarked on the "Europa", only two entires with this peculiarity are known (Higgins & Gage#6)

During the ships journey a terrible cholera epodemic afflicted the people provoking several deaths. The vessel was rejected by Uruguay and Brazil and forced to sail back to Italy, where it was kept in quarantine close to the isle of Pianosa
