Corbitts Sale #163 - Day 1
Our latest auction (Sale 163) was initially scheduled for May and then postponed owing to the pandemic. Now that lockdown has eased we can go ahead with our sale at the Britannia Hotel over two days instead of one which will help us abide by the social distancing rules.
Viewing
We have taken two extra days at the hotel before the auction for viewing, which again will help with social distancing; we would recommend this as the best option.
If you wish to view the auction lots at our Newcastle offices you can do so from Monday 10th to Friday 21st August (weekdays) by appointment only.
Please ensure you bring a face mask/covering with you. Gloves will be provided and these must be worn at all times during viewing.
Attending the sale
If you are attending the auction in person, face masks/coverings must be worn.
When planning your journey, please bear in mind this sale is live on the internet and we generally achieve a rate of 200 lots per hour.
If you are feeling anxious about attending the sale, you can, as always, send your bids by post or email before the sale to be added to the book or you can bid live through Easylive Auctions. Easylive offer a great option of a £3 flat fee, which allows you to bid on as many lots as you like with no other charges.
Bidding
Unfortunately we will be unable to offer our usual room bidder (boxed) lots which always prove to be popular with many of you.
The auction room numbers will be limited (maximum of 30 people). Therefore, we ask that bidders move in and out of the room accordingly. We understand customers may wish to bid on multiple lots but if there is a space between your lot numbers please leave the room until ready to bid again.
Refreshments
Owing to regulations we are unable to provide our usual tea/coffee and sandwiches. However, customers can order from the main reception area of the hotel.

1901 ½a postal stationery envelope to Mundra (India - Gujarat State) with additional ½ anna on reverse tied barred 'B' in oval, 'ZALIA/SOMALI COAST/7.AU.01' c.d.s alongside, ADEN & 'SEA POST OFFICE/SE OI' transits & 'MUNDRA/9.SE.01' arrival also on reverse. Complete original letter enclosed from Jakoob, Essmail, Meman/Somali Coast Zaila. Mail from Zaila this period is rare, with original letter is exceptional.

1904 (4th Campaign against Madhi) envelope franked pair ½a, cancelled 'BERBERA/15 MA 04' c.d.s with arrival b/stamp. Very unusual item of military related mail used through Civil Office while 4th Campaign was continuing and Base Office was open. Very scarce.

1915 censored cover to Madras, India, franked 1a, tied 'BERBERA/12 DE 15/SOMALILAND' c.d.s, violet 'passed by censor' h/stamp below applied in Somaliland. Various Indian b/stamps. Scarce.

1939 French correspondence cover, with contents, sent to Ireland by Capt. Humphrey French with the Somaliland Camel Corps, Kings Africa Rifles, franked 2As tied 'BERBERA/16 OC 1939' c.d.s, rare violet triangular 'PASSED BY/1/CENSOR/BERBERA'.

1942 stampless Italian POW envelope used to Italy, cancelled 'E.A/A.P.O 75/14 IV 42' c.d.s. and POW/E.A.C/15 APR 42' c.d.s. The APO c.d.s was used at Harar, red censor hand stamp on front, Italian arrival b/stamp. The letter enclosed is written from Mandera (Berbera). Scarce.

1945 commercial air letter addressed to England bearing 3As, tied 'E.A/A.P.O 71/3 VI 45' of Berbera, violet boxed PASSED BY BASE CENSOR.E.A. No. IV/01.' Violet shield censor also on front '0/18' in violet censor on reverse 'E.A/A.P.O 65/5 VI 45' transit b/stamp. 'Army Form W 3424/OPENED/BY/CENSOR' tape at top with m/s 'No.314' presumably applied by censor. Very scarce.
