Mexico, Vapor Newbern, Agente De Correos. Purple oval handstamp (Schimmer maritime 30, rarity 9) tying 1885, Hidalgo Profile, 6c + 10c + 20c on Mazatlan corner card cover to Paris, France, the cover boarded in Mazatlan and discharged in Guaymas with "Franco Guaymas Jul 16 1885" octagon date stamp on reverse (Schimmer Son 35/4), then by rail with Benson, Ariz. and New York transits. Paris receiver; 20c with pre-use corner nick, otherwise Very Fine, beautiful examples of this rare Newbern ship cancel, a wonderful showpiece.

Charpenter, Renaud Co was an importer of European goods sold retail in Mazatlan. The Newbern was associated with silver smuggling into the USA which had a high tariff on silver. It foundered on rocks at Pt Fermin, San Pedro, California and sank in 1893 with $250,000 in cargo, mostly silver, aboard.
