lot # 2280 - wrappers king george v sideface
œd green (#W3) with 'NEWSPAPER ONLY.' Type 2 of Adelaide BW #W6(2), part-strike only in black, to Terowie with œd green tied by GPO cds of FE11/21, Cat $150. Illustrated at page 310.
In October 1920, all post offices were advised that in future wrappers were to be used for posting only newspapers. Henceforth, all wrappers were required to bear the inscription 'NEWSPAPER ONLY'. In most cases this was hand-written (or ignored!) but at least five handstamps were used. These handstamped wrappers are considered to justify separate listings as provisional issues. It is indicative of their scarcity that, at present, only 7 of the 15 possible combinations of indicium & handstamp have been recorded, and only the Adelaide & Perth handstamps have been positively "tied". Because this class of wrappers have previously been largely unknown, we expect that the catalogue prices will prove to be conservative.
