lot # 1 - titanic postal history

Thursday Feb 23, 2017 19:00 America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires

Postcard sent on 11/AP/1912 from the Titanic by the ONLY ARGENTINIAN PASSENGER to a friend in Italy, during the last stop of the ship at the port of Queenstown. Franked with 1p., datestamp of Queenstown and arrival mark of Torino 14/AP. With important defects but it is a great historic rarity and unique in its kind. It was sent by Edgar Andrew to his friend Pancho Despósito, they were both friends, and lived and worked together at a ranch in Rio Cuarto (Córdoba), owned by Mrs. Harilaos. In 1911 Andrew was in England about to travel to the US, where his brother was waiting for him, and his friend Despósito lived in Torino and was studying to be a vet. Andrew had a ticket to sail in another ship that was not the Titanic, but a strike of coal workers forced him to change his ticket. The Titanic made her last stop in Queenstown before crossing the Atlantic, and from there Andrew mailed several postcards (identical) to his family, his girlfriend in Argentina, and his friend Pancho in Torino. Andrew died in the wreck, because he gave his life jacket to a lady that survived the sinking and later told the story of his gesture. This card was "forgotten" for more than half a century between the pages of a book of Dr. Despósito, with nobody knowing about its existence until it was found by chance by the descendants of Pancho in 1961, when the original addressee had already passed away. This lot includes the card along with a cover with a special postmark of the Argentine Post: "Homenaje a Edgardo Andrew - náufrago Argentino en el Titanic - ofrendó su vida con abnegación y solidaridad - 15 abril 1998", and photocopies of articles of Argentine newspapers (Clarin and La Nación) telling this story. ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY to get a unique and historic object, witness to one of the most important events of the XX century.
