Used to China (Canton) in 1858. 1857, Queen Victoria, 4d rose, Large Garter watermark, horizontal pair, used with 1d red, both tied by "Liverpool JA 4 1858" spoon cancel with "466", on folded letter datelined "New York 22 December 1857" to Canton China; manuscript "via Marseilles" at lower left; Hong Kong and red London backstamps; a few perfs of the 1d red folded over the top edge, otherwise Very Fine.

9d paid the 1 January 1857 to 28 June 1861 rate for ½ oz. via France. The folded letter has hand carried to Liverpool so there were no postal charges for this portion of the trip.
