Peninsular War 1808 (March 6): Entire letter written from Camp outside Madrid, Spain struck on front with three line 'BAU. GAL. / ARM. D'OBSERV. / DES CÔTES DE L'OCEAN' in black (Reinhardt = 750 pts). General Murat, in command of two Corps, was ordered by Napoleon to occupy Madrid without hostilities. On March 23, 1808 Murat ordered Dupont's 2nd Corps of Observation of the Gironde (25'000 men) and Moncey's Corps of Observation of the Ocean Coasts (29'000 men) to garrison Madrid. A very fine strike of a scarce handstamp.
