BOER WAR two covers both endorsed 'Veld Dienst', one with an additional 'Velddienst' h/stamp, posted from Volksrust 16 OCT & 19 OCT 1899. Volksrust was just inside the Transvaal border with Natal and a staging post for troops invading Natal. The first battle of the Boer war - Battle of Glencoe - took place south of Volksrust on 20 October.

BOER WAR 1900 cover to England from Lt. Col. C. J. Blomfield, a British P.O.W. at Daspoort Camp, Pretoria. The cover has small tear at upper right which is just into the stamp - Transvaal 2\xBDd, cancelled Pretoria 22.MAY.00 and a Boer P.O.W. censor h/stamp. Lourenco Marques 23 MEI and London JU.23.00 cancels on the reverse. Lt. Col. Blomfield of the 2nd Lancs Fusiliers was captured on 22 Jan 1900 at Spion Kop, Natal.

BOER WAR/SHIPWRECK 1900 cover to England written by a member of Lumsden's Horse, with a 1d cancelled East London MR.27.00, on the back is a two line RECOVERED FROM/WRECK OF MEXICAN & a Berkhamsted AP.28.00 arrival cancel. Lumsden's Horse was a corps of 250 mounted light infantry raised from white volunteers from India. They arrived at East London on March 22 where this letter was posted. BOER WAR 1901 censored cover written by William Louw to his mother from Colesberg Gaol, and censored 22.NOV.1901, the night before he was executed for treason by the British. It was posted NO.23.01, the day he died. Louw, a Cape Boer had been found guilty of treason for joining Boer Forces, by a military court on 4 November. His mother was a daughter of Rev Andrew Murray and was married to the Rev. A. A. Louw.

BOER WAR 1901 censored cover to Diyatalawa P.O.W Camp, Ceylon, with a combination of GB & O.R.C stamps cancelled Harrismith, that has a s/line PASSED CENSOR h/stamps which was applied on one of the transport ships taking P.O.W's to Ceylon. A Diyatalawa censor cachet is on the front, Durban 22.JA.01 & Diyatalawa FE.14.01 d/stamps on the back.

BOER WAR 1901 censored cover from Ceylon with a 6c cancelled Diyatalawa JA 01. On arrival at Bethulie, the cover could not be delivered, probably because the farm had been burned down by the British & the occupants removed. It was redirected to the Norval's Pont Refugee Camp, but on arrival a 'Not known at Refugee Camp' was handwritten. The cover was eventually returned to Ceylon, arriving Colombo SP.30.01 (nine months after sending)....

BOER WAR 1901 cover to the Matron at the Belfast Burgher Camp that was so redirected that an additional piece of paper had to be affixed! From Belfast it went to the Irene Burgher Camp, Pretoria, as well as Machadadorp, Durban, Pretoria a number of times and eventually Cape Town. It was censored 7 times in its travels! A colourful cover.

BOER WAR 1901 PPC from Ragama Camp, Ceylon, to General Olivier at Diyatalawa Camp, the 3c stamp cancelled on arrival by the censor. Also a 1901 cover from Diyatalawa camp to the O.F.S. that on arrival was unable to find the recipient and went from Bethulie to Norval's Pont Burgher Camp and then back to India & Ceylon six months after posting.

BOER WAR 1902 censored cover to Cape Town with a Free State 1d with the thick 'V' variety, cancelled Springfontein JA.2.02. Censored with tape and initialled by the censor in blue crayon, the cover has a 'Passed Censor/Refugee Camp Springfontein, O.R.C' cachet. Springfontein Refugee Camp was the only camp in the O.R.C to have censor cachets identifiable by the camp's name. A Cape Town 4.JA.02 arrival cancel is on the back.

BOER WAR 1902 censored cover to London endorsed at the top left 'Sent by L. M. Odell' the English teacher at the Norval's Pont Refugee Camp. A Cape 1d has been cancelled Norval's Pont AP.7.02 & a censor cachet has been applied to the front of the cover. On the back is a London AP.17.02 cancel. Odell taught English to Boer women & children in the refugee camp.

BOER WAR 1902 censored cover to Cape Town, redirected on arrival, endorsed at the lower left 'Afgezonden door U. Geyer, Camp Matron Norval's Pont C.C.' A Cape 1d has been cancelled Norval's Pont FE.26.02 & censor tape has been affixed & tied with a censor h/stamp. Mail from person in a Burgher Camp other than a prisoner is very uncommon. Also an incoming 1901 card from Kroonstad to the camp's doctor.

BOER WAR 1902 censored cover sent from the Norval's Pont Burgher Camp, a Cape 1d cancelled MY.6.02. Twice censored, this cover is addressed to C.W.H. Van der Post, a prominent member of the Free State Volksraad & later commandant of the areas South & East of Bloemfontein. He was captured by the British on 13th September 1900 but released on parole thanks to his civilized treatment of British prisoners. He went to live in Stellenbosch...

Although one of the larger refugee 'Burgher' camps, mail that can be positively identified emanating from it is rare.
