Stanley Gibbons

United Kingdom

Edward Stanley Gibbons was born in 1840, the same year the very first stamp was issued.

More than 150 years later, Stanley Gibbons Ltd is now the market leader in the stamp collecting world, and the Gibbons has become synonymous with philately. SG catalogues are considered the standard reference guide for stamp collecting and the sale of stamps. Stanley Gibbons are based in London, at 339 Strand Street, across the street from the Savoy Hotel on the River Thames.

The Philatelic Catalogues

The first Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogue, issued in November 1865, was a penny price list. This was later reissued at monthly intervals for the next 14 years. The company produces numerous catalogues covering different themes, countries and regions, many of which are reissued annually. The catalogues list all known adhesive postage stamp issues and include prices for used and unused stamps.
Unlike other major catalogues, Stanley Gibbons' catalogues provide retail prices for the items listed in them. That is to say that should those stamps be in stock, in the condition specified in the catalogue, the catalogue price would be their sale price. This contrasts with most other catalogues, which are produced by firms that are not involved in Stamp trade, thereby basing their prices on an average of market values in the country where the catalogue is published.
