1841, Queen Victoria line-engraved, 1d red brown (SG 8 var.), plate 70, with what appear to private experimental pin-perforations on three sides (scissor cut margin at left), uncanceled on a small envelope addressed simply to "Ward Esq"; the holes appear to be quite regularly spaced (about gauge 7) but, owing to the tough nature of the gummed paper, separation along the perforations proved difficult (stationers of the time frequently used pin-perforators to create tear-off check books, the thinner paper being more easily separated), also includes a used 1d red with what appears a bit like rouletting at the bottom, but which the R.P.S. ruled was just a rough separation., with 2015 R.P.S. certificate giving no opinion as to the contemporary nature of the perforations, nor whether the stamp was attached to the envelope at the time of issue.
Scott 3 var.
Estimate $200 - 300.

SG 8 var.
