Peru Outgoing Mail 1808, Feb. 28. Cover from an unknown origin to Madrid, bearing a fine strike of "Peru" straight-line handstamp, forwarded via Cartagena-Havana-Cádiz. Two manuscript rates including "30r.v." (reales de vellón) and "55", being most probably the latter which paid the required postage for a weight of one ounce and 14 adarmes. A very desirable dated transatlantic mail.

One of only three covers known after 1821, during the period of independence of most of the American colonies, bearing this "Perú" postmark.

Entire letter from Cádiz (Spain) to Lima, indicating the maritime fee to be paid by the recipient with boxed "3 Pta" in red, equivalent to 3 reales of the maritime fee, and "Cadiz"straight-line, both in red. Endorsement "en la frag.ta Rosa", being the frigate which crossed the Atlantic carrying this letter. A very scarce mail with this rate marking on transatlantic mail.

One of just three covers known bearing the double rate handstamp of Cádiz for transatlantic mail....
