The Australian lots cover all periods, from the Kangaroo issues up to Decimal and contains numerous number of mint & used £1 & £2 top values. This auction includes a Third Watermark 5/- Kangaroo Grey & pale yellow, error WATERMARK SIDEWAYS, showing full 'crown A' (crown to right looking from back), with marginal wmk line & small portions of marginal letters. Superb U appearance with neat 1918 cds, partial telegraph punch extremely well repaired & basically invisible. Excellent centring, perfect perfs & nice colour. ACSC 44d cat $125,000. SG 42ba cat £85,000 = A$150,000. This is the 2nd known example & an important new discovery that was found in Europe this year. (The other known example was in the Arthur Gray collection, & despite having a badly smeared cancel & short perfs sold for US$96,000 in 2007). Great rarity of the Kangaroo issues & an important error stamp of Australia & of the British Empire. 2019 Ceremuga AIEP photo-cert. (Lot 1139). In the asian section of China - Republic a 1925 Surcharge issue '3 Cts.' in red on Junk 4c slate-grey 2nd Peking printing, error opt INVERTED. Superb fresh MLH, nice original gum & excellent centring. Sc 274a cat US$300,000. SG 370a, Chan 281a. CSS 327b cat US$250,000. One of the greatest rarities of 20th Century Chinese philately, certainly the top of the 'Four Treasures of the Republic'. Only ten examples of this error were originally reported discovered in 1925, seven mint & three used. Amazing opportunity to purchase this pristine quality rarity.

Edward Albert Charles MacFarlane, born Melbourne 1889, enl AIF as Lieutenant, Sydney 16/6/15, to Egypt from 9/12/1915 inc Suez Canal Defences, to France 16/6/16 & OP's from 8/7/16 inc Bois Grenier, Fromelles, Fleurbaix & Armentieres, Captain 29/4/1917, Bombing Officer, 8th Bde, 29/7/1917, to Duty as Camp Commandant HQ, ANZAC Corps 21/12/1918, RtA & Reserve of Officers 1/1/1920. No further service. Awarded Military Cross on the basis of the following recommendation raised 21st September 1916 by Commander 8th Brigade; 'On the night of 16th September 1916, Lieutenant MacFarlane commanded a party from the 30th Bn, 8th Infantry Brigade, in a raid the enemy trenches. He display commendable gallantry, coolness and judgment, personally captured two of the enemy, and succeeded, not withstanding heavy retaliatory fire, in bringing his party back with but one casualty. The success of the operation was in a very great measure due to the zeal and energy displayed by Lieutenant 'No Man's Land' with members of his party on several nights prior to the operation'.^ On original full length ribbons. aEF. This auction also showcases the final part of a unique collection of KING EDWARD VIII comprising more than 1900 items offered in some 330 lots, the Dennis Hughes collection, for sale here, is probably the most comprehensive offered at auction since the famous Giordano collection sold by Spinks in 2009. The collection covers a period of more than 120 years, from the 1895 four generations medal, through Edward’s investiture in 1911, Royal Visits in the 1920s and 1930s, his much anticipated 1937 Coronation and subsequent Abdication and exile, followed by an extensive range of the very popular retrospective fantasy coins and medals produced up until 2016. This auction includes the very rare 1936 KEVIII 2d red wmk Crown CofA UNISSUED due to his abdication. A full sheet was presented to the Governor of Victoria when he visited the printer. When the decision was made not to issue KEVIII stamps the Governor was asked by the printer to return the sheet which he did, with the exception of the blk of 6 removed from the LL cnr of the sheet, which he had sent to William, Baron Vestey in England, so the printer did not press the point. Vestey's grandson offered the blk of 6 in 2014 through Spinks London, where it sold for £240,000. A single was sold at a 2015 Melbourne auction for almost $173,000. Comes with copies of correspondence between the printer & the Governor regarding the return of the stamps. VF fresh MUH. A great rarity of Australian philately. (Lot 1209). Lightly toned UNC. Guaranteed genuine KM-77 cat US$5000. Reserve $3,800 (Lot 8392). Also in the world banknote section is a Boer War - Siege of Mafeking. 1 Shillings January 1900, 'Issued by the Authority of Colonel R.S.S. Baden-Powell', with embossed 'Bechuanaland Protectorate / One Penny' embossed duty stamp, with numbered counterfoil at left, showing it came from a special booklet (most of these notes were issued in stapled pads without any counterfoil). Choice UNC in absolutely pristine fresh original condition. P-S651a cat US$1500+ plus large premium for the intact counterfoil. This originates from a partial booklet ex John Ineson collection, and previously no examples with intact counterfoils were recorded. In any case any Mafeking notes extremely rare in such high grade. Tasked with the transportation of the Prime Minister, Cabinet Officials & high ranking Military Officers throughout Australia & the SW Pacific area. AFC, GVIR, in its original box of issue. Reverse engraved officially: '1947'. Together with his unnamed as issued 1939-45 & Pacific Stars. Also included is the original, addressed box of issue for the latter & his original 1949 dated medal entitlement slip listing these & his AFC. Flight Lieutenant Eric Thomas Wallis Holt, born 1913, Alpha, Qld. Enl RAAF 17/8/41. Sgt Pilot 1942. W/OFF & Ops with 36 Sqn 1943/44. F/Off 1/11/44. To 1st Communication Unit 13/6/45. Morotai, Borneo, Lae etc from June 1945 to Mar 1946. Disch 6/6/46. AFC - awarded per London Gazette 12/6/47, p.2604 for Operations in 1945: 'HOLT, Eric Thomas Wallace, Flight Lieutenant (413384), 1 Communication Unit RAAF. Flight Lieutenant Holt has been Captain of a Dakota aircraft engaged in the transportation of very important persons & has completed 300 flying hours flying on these duties since June 1945. His aircraft has carried many Cabinet Ministers & high ranking army officers on important missions. Flight Lieutenant Hold has invariably displayed the utmost energy & efficiency on such flights & his manner & example have been an inspiration to his crew. During the Christmas period in 1945, he flew the Prime Minister of Australia on a tour of the Northern islands & during this time, showed a sense of responsibility which averted a possible serious accident. Flight Lieutenant Holt has completed a very large total of flying hours with the Royal Australian Air Force, 1700 of which have been in operational areas in difficult & hazardous circumstances. (LG 12/6/1947 p 2604). Also entitled 1939-45 War & Australia Service Medals. EF. Extremely scarce especially so with the Prime Minister & VIP Pilot connection.
