The 2014 Spring sale contains over 2,100 collection, discount lots, accumulation and liquidation lots, substantial country collections, whole estates, that will interest both dealers and collectors.
The stamps section includes collection from all corners of the world with strong Germany, many west and east Europe as well as Americas, Asia, Africa and Middle East. Some thematic collections, covers and cards and much more to discover!
The philatelic section includes 204 lots of literature covering large areas of collecting interests.
"The Black Queen" - Canada 12 d. Black 1851 can be considered as one of the Legends of Philately. Only about 1450 copies were sold at the post offices, but most of these stamps perished over the period of 163 years since this stamp was issued. Today many experts consider a number of approximately 50 copies as a realistic figure when it comes to the question of how many stamps may still exist (unused, used copies and some on letters in total).
The item we are able offer in our April 11-12, 2014 sale was considered to be lost and now turned up - after generations. It has some paper faults (creases, thin at right) but is of a fresh and attractive appearance with close to full margins all around. It comes with a brand new RPS, London certificate stating that the stamp is genuine but an unused status cannot be certified. SG quotes 180.000 GBP for an unused stamp and 100.000 GPB for a used copy. Our estimate of 3000 Euros offers an opportunity to aquire the scarcest stamp of Canada, a major world rarity.
If it comes to rarities we would like to "introduce" a fabulous copy of the British Guyana 1856 "Four Cent magenta" - this one being eventually the copy with the broadest margins. The very sensitive glaze paper has some cracks as can be seen in the photo (leaving some white spots on the surface) but Sergio Sismondo`s certificate let this item range among the finest examples of this issue. (Est. 4000 Euros).
Philatelic Literature will be again on the agenda in our 345th auction of April 11-12, 2014.
A main section deals with bibliographies among some very rare items are worth being mentioned: "Die Philatelistische Litteratur" of 1895-96, 24 cpl. issues - these were supplements to the philatelic magazine "Die Post" (€ 60), "Verzeichnis der wichtigsten Werke..." by Rommel (1907) (€ 40), "Bibliographie der deutschsprachigen philatelistischen Literatur" (1925) (€ 40), Harris "Standard Index to Philatelic Literature" 1926-1932 (€ 80), a complete run (!) 1942-2012 of "The Philatelic Literature Review" (€ 400) or Manfred Amrhein`s "Philatelic Literature. A history and select. 1861-1991", 4 vols. cpl. (€ 350.-), just to name a few.
Many bibliophiles know the name of Sylvester Colby of New York, who`s company conducted 14 auctions of philatelic literature in the years between 1950 and 1972. A complete run of these auction catalogues is on offer (€ 300).
Welcome to Schwanke 344th auction, offering a wide variety of items with something for every serious collector. Our main catalog offers as usual high-class single items from all philatelic areas from, German States to overseas countries. In total there more than 2300 single items and approximately 1500 collections and bulk lots on offer.
Auction highlights include -
NORWAY - about 40 lots of the classic period should be mentioned. Starting with a couple of fine copies of the No. 1 (including the "Dobbelfoot" variety fine used € 750). Others are beautiful covers of the 2nd to the 4th issue many of them with nice combination frankings. Pictured below is a "3 SKILL" stamp of the third issue as part of a "tricolore" to France (€ 2000).
SOVIET UNION - three unissued stamps on one cover, sent registered - this item of the late 1950ies is one of the highlights of this area. Whenever one of these scarce stamps turns up at auction prices are mostly beyond "god and evil", e.g. mostly above catalogue valuations. All three together on a philatelic item look like a "Fata Morgana" (€ 7000)
CHINA - the still most popular area is well represented with good single items from „Large Dragons“ to PRC sets and souvenir sheets. But did you know... that Belgium had planned to issue stamps for their diplomatic corps in Pekin? Some stamps of the 1908 issue were prepared as „specimens“ bearing the overprint CHINE and the face value in Chinese currency „4 cents“. According to a census published by the COB there are only half a dozen of such specimens in existence the one we are offering is considered to be one of the best preserved ones in existence. It is offered together with a post card written by a member of „Légation Belge en Pekin...“ (€ 4500).
POLAND – scarce 5 Kr Postage due (€ 1500) or ROMANIA 108 Parale with gorgeous margins and crisp red JASSY cancellation (€ 3000)
SWITZERLAND – the scarce Air Mail 10 on 15 Rappen overprint inverted item, MNH with new certificate (€ 4000)

Auction 339th with more than 8,500 lots of Coins, stamps, postal history, Postcards and Literature is online. Highlights of the auction:
A very unusual offer of 89 lots of the EGEAN ISLANDS, mainly postal history stands at the beginning of our first auction in the New Year. There were Austrian, Italian and Turkish post offices in operation in the Egean before own stamps were issued in 1912. Each island had its own overprints, the archipelago later was under Italian, French and German occupation until finally after WW II it came under Greek governmental rule. This often changing political ups and downs produced a plethora of different cancellations, frankings, registration and censor marks and is a challenging field for an advanced collector.
The depicted cover was sent registered from the isle of Castellorizo under French occupation in the year of 1920. There is only little commercial mail known from this period (est. € 450.-).
AUSTRIA will be another heavyweight in our next catalogue. Not only the good pre-WW II issues such as the WIPA souvernir sheet or the Dollfuss stamp are on offer, the main strength lies in fine classic stamps and covers such as multi-colour frankings or high frankings to foreign destinations. E.g. a yellow-black combination of the second issue starts at € 1200.-, a 1864 three-colour combination from Vienna to Schio opens at € 500.- and a high 71 Kr franking to Paris including the top value of the 1867 issues start with an estimate of € 1250.-.
HUNGARY`s 20th century postal history was affected by two inflations of which the period of 1945-1947 was a so-called hyper inflation with frankings comprising face values of several trilliards (for those who do not know how to write these figures down – a trilliard is a „1“ with 31 zeroes). A big collection detailed into 14 lots will be on offer.
FORWARDING AGENTS were of great importance during the 17th to 19th centuries handling transits from East to West and from North to South, competing with cheaper rates or better services with the state-owned posts. A remarkable transport system was established by Thomas Waghorn in the 1840ies with his Overland Mail through Egypt cutting the transport duration of mails to and from India to the half time. A nice example of the Waghorn mails is shown below. It opens at € 400.-.
Among a couple of rarities in the overseas section is a Mauritius Sherwin stamp, full margined and with deep rich colour, starting at € 2500.-, a complete set of the Diligencias of Uruguay (€ 450.-) and some 40 lots of classic US stamps among which a beautiful 10 Cents (Sc.No.2) on piece should be mentioned (€ 750.-).
A most stunning item is a letter origination from Oldenburg in the year of 1865. Its full content refers to the North Pole expedition of the British captain Sherard Osborn (which failed) and a planned but not realised French expedition at the same time. (€ 2500.-)
An overview of the GERMANY section shows an impressive gallery of rarities, postal history gems and, of course, all the sought-after standard items of all periods. Strenght lies in German States, German Reich and Colonies but there is also a good section of modern postal history. For example a specialised collection of Berlin comprising scarce frankings namely of the first after-WW II years is split by issues and totals to an estimate of approximately 20.000.-€.
Three outstanding items of the German section: German Reich 1923, so-called Hitler provisional (4 stamps on piece), est. € 5000.-, Bavaria Telegraph stamps fine used (est. € 3000.-), Wuerttemberg scarce TÜBRINGEN trial cancellation on cover (est. € 2500.-)
As usual a fine selection of PHILATELIC LITERATURE (c. 220 lots, amongst these some little „rarities“) will be on offer, as well as some lots of THEMATIC COLLECTIONS.
1400 lots of collections, bulk lots and whole estates will complete the offer with an estimate of more than 1 Mio. Euro in total.
