The April 1 sessions begin with the Olsson Collection of Large Dragons of China (lots 1-41). This first of four auctions over which this magnificent collection will be sold starts off with the exquisite De La Rue handpainted essays, the earliest designs for the first proposed postage stamp issue of China. The issued stamps include a set of mint sheets of the 1878 thin paper issue, while this outstanding sale concludes with seven magnificent covers, the centerpiece being the unique British incoming envelope to Newchwang with the handstruck “To Pay” applied in Shanghai.
This is followed by China Ching Dynasty and Republic issues (lots 42-840) and includes the superlative set of complete sheets of the 1894 Dowager Empress 60th Birthday Mollendorf printing, one of the finest arrays of Dowager covers to appear at auction in recent years, and noteworthy 1897 New Currency surcharge and perforation varieties.
