The stamps of the British colonial territories represent most probably, as a group, the most elegant and comprehensive way to collect one of the largest groups of countries present in all six continents. This collection was formed by a passionate collector with this purpose and to present himself with a broad range of philatelic challenges from countries he had not previously known : a fascinating combination of exploring, learning and achievement.
No less than 50 countries with over 1900 lots are herewith presented in Part 1 of this vast and valuable assembly with studies in errors, varieties, settings, some interesting postal history and of course the ever present fascination with so many rare stamps, but also many very rare which may not yet be adequately priced in monetary terms to reflect their great scarcity. Not since our offer and very successful sale of the David Melat collection in 1986 have we had the pleasure to present such a wide and attractive spread of British Colonials.

David Feldman SA is honoured to announce the auction of two fantastic properties, both famous Grand Prix winners.
The British Guiana Collection from John E. du Pont.
The collection includes over 200 individual items with mint, used, covers and several great rarities. It features many items from the collections of famous philatelists such as Ferrari, Hind, Burrus and Caspary, and comes to the market almost 30 years after last being seen on display and over 50 years since the last significant auction of British Guiana stamps. The collection spans the pre-stamp period, the famous primitive “Cotton Reels” of 1850, through the various issues up to 1889, including British Post Offices and Official stamps.
The collection includes now fewer than 33 “Cotton Reels”. To put this in to perspective, the Royal Collection has 20 examples and the Tapling Collection (in the British Library) has only 15. The major rarities of this issue featured in the auction include:
- 1850-51 2c rose of which less than ten are known
- 1850-51 4c pale yellow on cover, thought to be the only known single usage
The British Guiana collection was the greatest achievement of the collector and enabling John E. du Pont to win his 5th Grand Prix award which ranked him third in the list of multiple Grand Prix winners.
The Tasmanian Collection formed by Koichi Sato of Japan.
The collection won the National Grand Prix in Australia in 1999 and was judged again fourteen years later at the Melbourne International Exhibition (2013) where it won the Grand Prix d’Honneur. This award is given for the best collection among collections that have already achieved the highest awards!
These collections will be offered on June 27, 2014 in Geneva and we expect that another page of philatelic history will be written on this day !
