Several great estates and consignments anchor our Fall Auction!

Highlights:

•             Over 100 lots from Great Britain (to £5), plus strong Cyprus to £5 and Gibraltar, also to £5 and Malta with a rare 10/- (wmkd MCA).

•             Extensive Australia and states including the “key” 20/- green Postage Due, followed up with much Oceania.

•             We have an interesting range of Canada classics (plus BNA rarities), an extensive range of British West Indies including an almost impossible mint set of Grenada J4-J8, as well as a Tobago mint 1d manuscript bisect.

•             Africa appears to be stronger than usual with Sierra Leone to the £5, Uganda plus Zanzibar rarities and varieties.

•             British Asia is anchored by a solid Hong Kong section, many rare Malaya including a mint $25 from Perak and both a $25 and $50 from Trengganu.

Our 128th Specialized British Empire Public Auction

Emphasis on 1840-1935 issues

Featuring a marvelous early Colonial collection that was seriously built-up over many years by a great private client of ours, from New England.  He has an eye for scarce mint 20th-Century popular K Edward VII and K George V high values.

  • Great Britain features £1 from Q Victoria, K Edward VII and K George V; there are Gibraltar values to the £5.

  • British Central Africa has a £25 mint while Kenya & Uganda has K George V to the £5 and Natal also has a £5. Nyasaland goes to a £10 while Sierra Leone has both £5s. British East Africa ranges to the 50R and there are strong Gold Coast items (to the £2) and 34 different Madagascar lots.  Seychelles features a Z52 38¢ on 9d rarity and there is a Stellaland “Twee” error, major Togo items (to the 1M) and strong Zanzibar with 2½d provisional varieties, 200R Sultan’s Palace (never hinged) and more.

  • Canada shines with a Jubilee set to the $5, 1¢ Large Queen on laid paper with two Nova Scotia 1/-. There are comprehensive and strong runs of Bahamas and Barbados.

  • Falkland Islands features Centenary set and a scarce 5/- shade (never hinged!).  St. Helena shows the Tristan Relief set mint (plus used in blocks of 4). Samoa runs to the £5.

  • New Zealand has both “Teddy Bear” errors, ARs, OPSOs and more. There are quite a few rare Pacific Islands varieties and some nice Australian ‘Roos.

  • Straits Settlements has both K Edward VII $25s and Hong Kong has some nice lots to the $10.

Overall this Auction features a strong selection of popular Colonial sets and high values (many never hinged); A-Z, with many difficult and hard to find lots.

This new Public Auction contains many interesting and valuable stamps from all parts of the Empire!

• Great Britain includes high value 10/- large squares, Sea Horses to the £1 and a good Officials section.

• British West Indies has key Antigua stamps; Bahamas shows an 1865 1/- in unusual “superb” quality; Barbados features a unique ½d double overprint (both in black) ex-Ferrary; a Bermuda highlight is a KGV 2/6d in bright orange-vermilion; British Guiana features classic perforated issues; Grenada has the all-but-impossible second issue Postage Due set, mint (a different set than last time!); Turks Island shows a nice range of overprints.

• British Africa is very well represented, including Bechuanaland 4d on 4d, 26 (25), a great used rarity; Cape of Good Hope shows a nice 1/- yellow-green Triangle, mint, and the scarce ½d on 3d overprint, wmkd CC, mint; Egypt weighs in with 50pi Port Fouad, mint and used; there are over two dozen large Madagascar Consular Mail stamps; Natal features a 1/- green “Postage.”, used, 25 (43); Niger Coast features a very scarce mint 27 (336) ½d on 2½d; many rare Togo overprints to the 1M; and a large range of Zanzibar overprints finishes the continent.

• Great Britain is strong in exceptionally well centered 19th-Century high values and better Officials (to the £1). Cyprus starts with a #1 mint--Plate 19!

• Gold Coast weighs in with a 20/- red and green used (ex-Col. Danson and “Nashville”), this is one of only 2 known genuine examples, plus a scarce used £2. There is strong Togo to the 1M and a large Zanzibar section.

• Quite a few good New South Wales Sydney Views, nice Australian Postage Dues. Fiji “Times” 1d and 6d values, strong New Zealand “O.P.S.O.” section and the KE VII ½d green overprint error (one of only five!).

• A strong range of 19th-Century Bahamas and also nice British Guiana “Ships” and scarce provisionals, some interesting and scarce “Saints” stamps (esp. the large St. Vincent section).

• Jordan is strongly represented and we have the rare key Sudan Army Official.

• Bechuanaland ranges to the £5 and the 5/- and 10/- “Protectorate” overprints, Cameroons showcases scarce used high values, Cape shows off a 1d “wood block” error of color and the key perorated ½d on 3d overprint wmkd CC, lots of Madagascar Consulate stamps, New Britain selections of “G.R.I.”s to the 5/- on 5M, New Republic features the 1d “black”, there are important Rhodesia through the £5 overprint, used, plus a £1 perf 15 mint “Double Head”.
