lot # 1631 - g.b postal history machines
1934 (Nov 2) Cover to Sir Stephen Tallents at the GPO with 1934 11⁄2d tied by the London machine with "OPENING OF MOUNT / PLEASANT SORTING / OFFICE BY T.R.H THE / DUKE & DUCHESS OF YORK", containing the original insert card showing the Sorting Office, with the printed explanation "this card was passed through the postage stamp cancelling machine by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York ...". Very small tear at upper edge, otherwise an exceptionally fine example of this scarce machine, very uncommon with the enclosed card. This cancel was only used on mail sent to VIPs, mainly high-ranking Post Office officials. Photo on Page 235.
Suggested price: £ 200-250
